My son-n-law purchased a new Asus laptop with Windows 7. She brought it home from BestBuy and linked it to her wireless router and the system worked great. She received a notification that there were 39 updates, so she installed them.
2ndly she attempted to install her free subscription to Casper Sky anti-virus that came with her purchase-froze at %93, a message says you have broken or damaged file do you want to fix them? She clicked on yes, hours goe by, nothing.
Now the system screen goes haywire, mouse moves by itself, the bottom taskbar vanishes and a message box says it is trying load missing files?
I talked to her on the phone and had her reboot & try a system restore, she was able to do this and now is able to use the system some what (to be determined if it will reload anti-virus and updates)?
It appears something corrupted something? Any ideas?
I will talk with her this morning to see if she was able to load her antivirus & updates or not. She is a notice user in respect to thr internal operation as I am.

I think the Best person to help with that would Be ReadMeToo but it is still warrenty since it was just brought home from Best Buy so it should be free if Best Buy was to look at it correct

Thanks GJ, she spent most of yesterday on the phone with the local GeekSquad, they said to bring it in and they would look at it. I was hoping it was something simple. I pushed them to get Windows 7 not their current operation system for No hands on needed that I have read so much about. Now I am thinking they might need to invest in the GeekSquads service package that costs more $$$$'s. Thanks again.

Wait for ReadMeToo to pop in as he might have some advice and help to give since he is the computer expert here for problems just like this

Since it is new and really nothing put on it just yet I suggest to get the restore disc and restore it to factory settings and try this all again.

I would do as charlie suggests. Either restore it or do a fresh install of the OS. These type machines usally have it partitioned into the hard drive and it installs from there with no disc needed. Unless you have been given the DVD.?
Kaspersky discs can often do this. Recently a similar problem happened to me as well. Managed to get round the freezing and error message but defraging and then cleaning the disc.
Keep trying it will install unless you have a damaged disc. Completely un install using Ccleaner and ASC free and then have another go.

I don't know about Asus but the last 2 machines I bought, an HP Win 7 desktop and a Acer Vista Ultimate laptop didn't have backup disks... I had to make a restore disk from the machine before I used it... they have a restore directory but no disks... AND ... they recommended making the disk before installing any software on the machine including updates... I don't know that this applies to Tim's case though

Ultimate Vista was like this I am unsure how they are doing it with Win 7.

Thanks all, she has the disc to do this (Operating system (Win7) & the driver disc as well). Who knows she might get up this morning and all is well? Being that this is only the second day (today) that she has had the new computer, I think she should take it back to Best Buy. I am looking for the "what" (cause) so in the future it either can be prevented or corrected by her. Again thanks for all your suggestions. Any thoughta around the Casper Sky antivirus or should she use Charter's Security Suite (Free from service provider)?
Tim
I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials and it has been working for me pretty good along with IObit Security 360 and Advanced System Care

Neither I'd use Microsoft Security Essentials. The charter pack is very generic and bad and never heard of the other.
Also when I used to buy prefabbed PC's the reformatting and restore was always the first thing I did. Reason is ..... The company's use a big machine to put about 20 HDD's in with one extra that has the OS on it. This is ghosting and it puts a unique serial on each hdd too. There can be glitches in the ghosting process this is why I suggested to do a destructive recovery.

Wow! Great info. remember who I am (Novice minded lol) recommendation is to completely format the computer an reload the operating system correct? I know there are several junk programs on the laptop from vendors.

Yea this can be a destructive recovery where it wipes the drive and reformats it then installs all factory defaults. You actually don't delete anything the built in program will do it all for you :)

I just spoke with my daughter and the restore did not work, so we did it in safe mode. Now I do not think this is what we discussed? But it seemed to work. She just completed downloading Microsoft Security Essentials. It appears she is good to go with the exception of not know what Happened?
My question I am interested in Microsoft Security Essential for my system (xp), should I unistall McAfee first?
Thanks for all you folks for your help... AWESOME (not yelling lol).

Not sure either. For you yes uninstalling that first would be advised. I also say to download MSE to the PC first so you are ready after the uninstall.
