View Full Version : PDF vs. Word Doc

Here's my story. I had an old (8 yrs.) Microtek Legal size scanner that worked very well on Win XP.
(I could scan just about anything I wanted as word doc's)
Then comes along Win Vista and the most recent (and last) drivers that were available worked after much fiddling with. Then comes Win 7. The scanner will no longer work on my Win 7 Home Prem. (64 bit) system, so I bought a Canon scanner and I find out it will only scan to PDF's, JPEG, TIF etc., but not Word Doc's. I'm assuming this is because of copyright infringements. :cop:

So what would be the easiest & best way to either convert PDF's to Word Doc's "or" be able to change text in a PDF? Is there a free & safe program to do either one of these? All input welcomed. Thanks!

So there is no option to save to text document? I can't save to PDF on my scanner unless I overlooked something.

Nope. May be this is a Canon thing?

Not sure let's see what others say. Have you emailed cannon and see if they will respond or even call them?

No on both. I will try an email.

All the free stuff from Adobe Acrobat is just readers, no way to change anything. You need the version which allows you to create PDF's.
Usualy the scanner will default to a text document or jpg.

Thanks Bob. I was aware of the Adobe reader not being able to change anything and was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for a program (as there are several online) that were any good and safe to use or a way to convert to a word doc?

Whats missing is OCR software being installed.

If Canon did not provide an OCR program then you might want to look at these links:

How to Scan a Document into Word: ([Only registered and activated users can see links])

Simple OCR: ([Only registered and activated users can see links])

I have not used in OCR software but this should give you something to read and get started in the right direction.

Hope it helps

I use Omni Page Pro for scanning, $99 US and I use the same for work and home. Scans myriad ways to text, single, multiple columns, proofreads, spell checks, etc.

It worked into Word with macros using 2007, 2003, etc. The macros will not install into 2010 Beta X64. But I can scan to Omni Page Pro, and save as TXT, RTF, and DOC, and Word can open all. It is fast, and accurate as could be.

To Vinman,

Ok, my preliminary test shows that this program DOES work for my old Microtek legal size flatbed scanner. Excellent!
So my next question now is in your opinion does it make sense to buy the standard version or the professional?
Are the periodic updates of the program worth it in your opinion to get the professional version for the unlimited updates?

Thanks again!

Yeah I know, but was wanting to know Vinman's experience if the updates were often and really needed.

Is there a list of past updates (versions) and what they do on their web site? If the updates are just adding other scanners then it might not be worth it for you. If they are program enhancements then that is a different story.

Yea, I couldn't find any list for the updates and therefore the question for Vinman.

Email them and see what they say :) See if they'll link you to the previous/past updates.

UPDATE: The owner/developer Ed Hamrick responded to my email about his software.

I asked how often he posts updates and his response was every week or so.
I asked if he posted these updates and the last few can be found seen: [Only registered and activated users can see links]

On his site it states you can upgrade from the standard to premium, I asked if there was any time limit for doing this and he said, no there is not.

So in closing, I want to Thank You Vinman for providing this info.
