View Full Version : Slow reads and burns
Hi and thanks for the welcome. My first request for help is now needed. I purchased the new upgrade to PRO and followed all the instructions by getting rid of the old version and re installed the latest version and then loaded the upgrade. When I copy a DVD it takes as long as the movie runs. If the movie is one hour, copying is one hour, if the movie is 2 hours, coping is 2 hours. Then to burn to a new DVD, it takes the same amount of time. I am told it should not take this long. Can you help and advise what I need to do in order to cut the copy and burn times. I have set the setting to MAX and have tried setting to the same speed the DVD says. 8x 16x etc. I am using Sony DVD's and have both -R and Plus R.

Hi I moved your post as you are wanting help and to get that quicker it is best to post in the appropriate section since you have pro and doing a dvd to dvd backup this is the place for that.
When was the last time you clean out your HDD and defragged it. Are you sure you are doing dvd to dvd and not dvd to mobile? On the pro version you don't click mobile if you are wanting to do a DVD to DVD backup.
Thank you for moving my question. I am new at this and using the software, but want to become proficent with it.
I will defrag my PC and try again. I did copy using DVD to DVD and not using the mobile button.

I would also look into your DMA settings. This sounds like a common DMA issue.
As Charlie suggested, keep your system clean and as proficient as possible. Always degrag and run reg cleaners weekly. :agree:

Thank you. I did a defrag and have my HDD really clean, and just put in a new DVD to copy. I selected movie only tab and it came up with a copy time of 1hour 15 min. I suspect the burn time will be close to that again if it follows the past times.
I am not sure what you mean with DMA settings. Can you explain for me.
Thanks again.

Reset your DMA - DVD neXt COPY Support Forum (http://www.dvdnextcopysupportforum.com/showthread.php?t=556&highlight=dma)
What is the PC OS and specs? The above will assist you on DMA and slow reads as well but if you have a older PC this sounds about normal depending what is on the PC hardware wise. How full is the HDD?
I have windows XP Pro. The Hard drive C is 120 GB and has 86 GB free space. I do have another external HD connected. It is a 500 GB and has 435 GB free space.
Primary IDE device 0,device type (nothing highlighted) transfer mode is DMA if available. Ultra DMA mode 5
Primary IDE device 1,device type (Auto Detection hilighted) transfer mode is DMA if available, current transfer mode (not Applicable)
Secondary IDE device 0, transfer mode PIO only, current transfer mode PIO Mode,
Secondary IDE device 1, transfer mode PIO only, current transfer mode PIO Mode
I hope this is what you asked and will help determine if I should change any of the settings.
Thank you

Yes click on that link above your last post and run that script and the reboot the PC as you have 2 devices in PIO mode this explains the slow times on reading and burning.
How much RAM is it dual channel or single channel if it is a prefab PC you can post that so I can look around.

charlie is right reset your secondary to DMA and you should be good to go!
Good Morning and thanks,
I reset the two PIO to DMA. I have rebooted twice and everything seems ok, except the current transfer mode still shows PIO Mode on the secondary IDE. Will this change or do I need to do something different? I made the changes manually as instructed.
The PC is and original IBM desk top type and the RAM show 640MB.

Not to savvy on PC hardware but could be a dieing drive or a bad ribbon connected to the drive.

Are you using a 80/40 pin IDE conductor between your drives. ??
It is really advised even if your drives only support UDMA2.
This is what you need to look for.
The "C" drive in internal and the external drive is connected via USB cable. I did a trouble shoot on the "C" drive and everything has come up good.
The secondary IDE channels are still set at DMA if available, but the current transfer mode still reads PIO Mode. Is this what it should read?
Is there a way to bypass the C drive and use the external, or would that help?
I just tried burning another DVD and it took 1hr 45 min to copy and 1hr to burn.
Thanking you for any help along with what you have already given.

While reviewing my PC to see what else may be wrong in trying to solve the problem, I noticed that I have the following programs and not sure if they are the current version or should be removed. If they need updating, how or where would I get them.
1. Machinist2.set.exe
2. DVDXCP5_0.exe
3. DIV X NETWORKS V:6.O
Thanks

Sorry I stepped out for a bit DVDXCP5 is DVD X COPY version 5 not sure if that was installed or I mean still is? The machinist is the plugin for DNC to back up commercial DVD's. the #3 I am not sure but if you give Microburn some time he may know I can't find anything on google about it.
should I remove / delete the DVDXCP5??

I can't see it interfering but I would if it is installed.

also we need to correct your problem if its remaining in PIO mode that has to be fixed
try deleting that extension altogether and reboot it will rebuid itself on reboot and should remain as DMA from there on in
how do I delete the extension. I tried to highlight and cannot find a way or don't understand the way. I have rebooted several times.
Thank you.

high lite it and right click on it and select delete that should do it!
For some reason, it does not allow me to highlight the current transfer mode. There is an arrow for the transfer mode line which allows the change between DMA if available / PIO only. This I have changed to DMA if available, but will not do anything when I try to change, highlight the PIO only mode in the next box below. I have re-booted after making the changes allowed and nothing changes in hte current transfer mode.
Not sure what to do, and the speed for copying and burning is still the same.
Thank you

Don give this program a try as long as your operating system is xp it is in my sig at the bottom reset your dma just click on it.
Then reboot. To change it manually you have to go into the device manager and delete the drive(s) there then reboot, simply just changing the drop down won't do nothing.
Hi again,
I did the following and here are the current results.
I downloaded the VSO software, and I am not sure what to do with it after looking at it. It has given me the reports shown on the download screen. It looks like it was meant to test a CD / DVD after burning to see if there are any errors? Am I correct in my assumption?
I loaded the reset tool and followed the procedures and it did change the secondary DMA settings. Now I inserted a DVD to see if the copy process is any faster and it still shows that it will take 1 hour 15 min. to copy. Must assume that the burn cycle will be the same. After it is completed, I will log the time for your review.
Now that I have the DMA set properly is there anything else to be done to speed the process. The copy drive is Sony DRU 820A and the Burn drive is Sony DRU 500A.
I am using for the tests Blank Sony DVD plus R (RW)

Also what is the firmware you are using as well on the two drives?
The Sony DRU 820A's latest firmware is 1.0C to download and install it click the link.

With it being a P3 and that much ram and considering all the stuff that you have on it I would say this sounds about right. I had a P4 2.4 gig processor and it took me about an hour to do my backups then as well. I of course had other stuff on there as well that I used frequently.
The processor is P4 1.8GHz.
I have downloaded the two updates for the drives and if I now understand all of your help, I will have to live with the long times or get a newer computer.
I really appreciate all the help.

well to be quite frank and being polite this is what I did a year ago I had a computer with about your same specs so I bought a new one.
the one you have is fine but you will have longer read times ect.
I would reccomend shutting down the internet and all antivirus programs that are running while coping a movie it should help speed things up for you.:)

No problem Don yes PC specs really determain fast or slow read and write times as the burners can only work as fast as the slowest part of your PC in your case I would think the RAM is the slowest component on yours. We are in no way knocking or putting down your PC either, I just wanted to state this so you know as I said this once before and it was taken the wrong way than what I meant.
Thanks and I certainly did not take any of the advise wrong. I am new at this and just appreciate the help and honesty you all have given.
I just got my hands on a newer model laptop with the following specs, and tell me what you think about changing the program to this new pc, how to go about doing it, and most important, will this be the right thing to do or find a better pc? Or even add more RAM.??
HP Pravillion with MS Win XP Home edition V2002 , SP2 and completley updated with all MS updates.
Intel P4 3.00 GHz. (I think is is a dual processor)
512 MB Ram
DVD Toshiba ODD SD-R6252
I can use this as a stand alone pc for copying my DVD's.

This should get you around 40 minute reads I thing due to the RAM. I was running a dual core 3.0 and 512 and then 1 gig ram and got lower reads. My reads and writes when playing around are around 20 minutes and when I am doing a true back up and not playing I get those done in about 30 minutes reading and writing total. Although I am running a core 2 duo PC too so I will get better reads. Also dvd readers vary too some are better than others and anything connected USB will be a bit slower than those that are internal.

Don as far as changing computers with DNC you should have no problem there unless you have activated the program on two pc's already.
DNC license is for two computers you are allowed with a single license.:)
If you are going to be using a laptop for burning I would suggest buying a external burner for it.
I have a laptop and they just get so hot burning dvds with the internal burners.

Great advice Microburn. I second this suggestion too. Very important to use external burning when using a lappy. !!!
Regarding the spec subject. The more system ram you have the better. If you are able to upgrade do it.:agree: Ram is reasonably cheap and can help allot cure a few problems when more is added.
Personally i would not use less than 1GB with nowdays systems, but its not always possible with money ect.
Why not try the laptop anyway. ??? If it works you know for sure its the pc struggling.
keep us informed.
