1. Visit your burner's website, and update your burner's firmware if possible.

DVD neXt COPY Support Forum - Most Problems Solved By Doing A Few Things (http://www.dvdnextcopysupportforum.com/showpost.php?p=8&postcount=2)

If you don't know how to go about doing this Just ask we'll help you out.

2. Use good quality blank media. Try Verbatim, Maxell Broadcast Quality, Maxell Plus series, Taiyo Yuden Premium, etc (not Memorex, not generic Maxell, not Princo, not TDK from Costco, not Fuji, not Ritek). If you're going to make a double layer backup use Verbatim + R DL media (made in Singapore); I find most burners will burn Verbatim +R DL (made in Singapore) well at 4x (to be safe); other burners can burn this stuff at 6x or higher with no problems. Get to know your burner. Usually it is best to lower your burn speed a little (if you have a 16x burner and 16x rated media try writing to it at 12x or 8x instead of 16x)

3. For "+R, +RW, +R DL" blank media, change the booktype of the blank media you're using to "dvd-rom", if your burner supports bitsetting changes. This step improves the chances of playability and compatibility with (standalone, mostly) dvd players. The best way to do this is through the software that came with your burner (if possible).

Otherwise, use Nero cd-dvd speed. This is a free program. (Insert the blank media in your burner. Select your burner in the drop down box at the top of the screen. Click "Extra", then "Bitsetting". Make the change to "dvd-rom" and click "set".)

If Nero cd-dvd speed doesn't work for you (options are greyed out), do this:

a) Download and install imgburn:
The Official ImgBurn Website (http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download)
This is also a free program
b) Insert your blank media in your burner.
c) Select your burner in the "Destination" drop down box.
d) Click "Tools"-->"Drive"-->"Change Booktype"
e) Choose your burner type
f) Under "Change For:", select what you're using
g) If your current setting is "dvd-rom", leave everything alone and exit Imgburn and ignore step "h)"
h) Under "New setting", select "dvd-rom". Click "Change" and then "Ok". Exit Imgburn

Some drives lose their settings each time you eject, so you might have to do this each and every time before you burn.

You can skip this step if your burner defaults booktype to "dvd-rom" automatically with the various +R types of blank media.
You can also skip this step if you're using dvd-r, dvd-rw, or dvd-r dl blank media.

Not all burners support bitsetting.

4. I would like to post about an issue I'm having with DVD neXt COPY, but I don't know what basic information I should be providing so that others can help me. What basic information should I provide to help ensure others will bother to respond and not ask 20+ questions first? See link : Help us help you - DVD neXt COPY Support Forum (http://www.dvdnextcopysupportforum.com/showthread.php?t=1848)

5. Hey, you're wrong! I've been using this so-called "junk" blank media forever, and it's always worked fine. But suddenly these same discs from the same spindle don't work. I can even use some of this cheap blank media with other programs. Nothing has changed except DVD neXt COPY update, this doesn't make sense just stating this so you don't know what you're talking about if you try to pull just this off.

Bad quality blank media can vary in results from disc to disc, even within the same spindle. With good blank media you can play "find the bad blank" game. With inferior quality blank media you get to play "find the blank that works" game. And even when inferior blank media does work, you can play the "will my backups still play after 6 months (or even after two years)" game.

Use good quality blank media (Taiyo Yuden Premium, Verbatim, Maxell Plus, Maxell Broadcast Quality). Avoid Ritek, Memorex, regular Maxell blank media that you can find in most stores that are not made in Japan, Fuji, TDK from Costco, and Princo. Also, on average, it's wise to avoid blank media that's made in China or Hong Kong.

6. I'm trying to backup something that was originally recorded on a standalone dvd video recorder, and I'm having problems. Why?

DVD neXt COPY was intended for use with original pressed commercial dvds (or at least something that attempts to comply with a dvd-video standard) and not the dvd-vr (video recording) format. (see 3a)

7. Update your burner's firmware (if available) use VSO Inspector, if you are not sure tell us your brand and model number of your drive and we'll gladly help.

8. Use good quality media (Memorex, Ritek, Princo, Fuji, TDK from Costco, and Maxell that are not made in Japan are not good quality media). Are you using inferior blank media? If you're not using Taiyo Yuden Premium, Verbatim, Maxell Plus, or Maxell Broadcast Quality, then chances are the answer is yes.
If you use poor quality blank media, then you should expect problems.

9. Try lowering your burn speed (not below 4x; if you have a 16x burner and 16x rated media try writing to it at 12x instead of 16x; an 8x burn speed on 16x rated media wouldn't be a bad idea either) if you try to burn the disc too slow this will cause problem as if you were to burn too fast.

10. If you're using +R, +RW, or +R DL media, change the booktype to "dvd-rom"

11. Avoid sticker labels (they tend to cause problems).

12. Try setting a custom size of 4300 in DVD neXt COPY (but if you're using good media, you shouldn't have to) if you're using regular single layer dvd-5 (4.7GB) discs.

13. Download Nero cd-dvd speed or VSO Inspector. It's a free program. Select the tab labeled "scandisc". Insert the problematic backup disc, select the appropriate drive letter, and click "start". If Nero cd-dvd speed or VSO reports read errors, your backup is bad (which is the most likely case), your optical drive may be slowly dying, or your optical drive simply doesn't like the disc (or your choice of blank media)--even if the disc looks fine.

Bad burn quality is notorious around the end of discs (see step 5)
and also at layer breaks when using low quality DL media (use Verbatim +R DL media made in Singapore, and change the booktype to "dvd-rom")

Also, check the preview screen in DVD neXt COPY to ensure you're backing up the proper title.

14. I can't back up commercial DVD's or can't locate the machinist or third party plugin. What is anydvd?
