View Full Version : Virtual Device Driver format in registry is invalid

I tried finding a solution in the forums without luck, loved someone's avatar of the FireFox munching on the IE icon. Hope someone can help.

I installed DNC (2.9.8.2, first time user) on a new clean PC and had a slight hiccup when registering. I didn't note the message, but I think I'm getting the same error message when I start DNC.

I get a popup window titled "16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem"

The message reads:
C:\Windows\system32\cmd.exe
SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDriv ers. Vdd. Virtual Device
Driver format in the registry is invalid. Choose 'Close' to terminate the
application.

Upon clicking the DNC icon on my desktop to run DNC the error window pops up twice. After closing it the second time, DNC then starts and appears to function fine. I backed up and copied The Simpsons as a test. (The backup to cheap TDK DVD+R 16x media at 12x speed completed in under 25 minutes from start to finish. Whoa! Great!)

Should I be concerned about the error window when starting DNC? Any way to get rid of the pop up window?

I'm a newbie at running Windows Vista Home Premium, but literate with XP. Thanks in advance. D.L.

It's a free virtual drive you get when you buy DNC. You use it to view ISO images if you don't need it or want to use it just delete it.

Sorry for the delay. I downloaded and ran AWCP. Once I realized what it was for, I took the time to make an Acronis True Image backup. I ran AWCP and let it fix everything it found. Problem persists. D.L.

Done. Followed the Clean Install script. Problem persists.

Fwiw, I am using CCleaner, not AWCP. There are differences between XP and Vista, which the script does not address. Step 5 in the script directs one to download one of the reg cleaners but does not suggest running the program again. I assumed I should and did.

Please note be extremely careful and read this bulletin closely
when I locate the Vista fix I will post it.

This error occurs if the registry value VDD located at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\VirtualDeviceDrivers becomes corrupted. To fix this, simply delete the VDD value in the above key and replace it with another named VDD with of the type REG_MULTI_SZ.

Windows XP instructions:

Click Start->Run and type Regedit. Click OK
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\VirtualDeviceDrivers
Delete the VDD value NOTE: I did not delete this I just added the VDD value to the string below and it removed the error On Vista
Click Edit->New->Multi-String Value
Name the value VDD, press EnterWindows 2000 instructions:
With Windows 2000 you must use regedt32.exe instead of regedit.exe. The regular regedit will not allow you to add REG_MULTI_SZ's for some odd reason and a regular string value will not work in this instance.
Aside from that, the instructions are the same.
It also may be necessary to extract the original autoexec.nt and config.nt from your Windows CD, as they may be corrupted.

Click Start->Run and type expand x:\I386\autoexec.nt_ %systemroot%\System32\autoexec.nt (Where x: is your CD-ROM drive)
Click Start->Run and type expand x:\I386\config.nt_ %systemroot%\System32\config.nt
Click Start->Run and type expand x:\I386\command.co_ %systemroot%\System32\command.com

I don't see the need to use compatibility mode the XP SP2 option but the run as admin in compatibility and then click the advance tab is necessary. I think.

doesn't hurt anything LOL I do it but the problem I don't think is DNC at all ...

I tried Running as admin and compatible with XP before I posted. No go.

I checked registry. I have a Virtual Device Driver Keys under
\currentcontrolset\control
\Controlset001\control and
\Controlset003\control.

All three keys have only one value (Default/REG_SZ) with no value set.

I did an advance search and found no VDD files.

The PC is a HP, ECS MCP61PM-HM mobo, AMD Athlon 64 x2 5000+ 2.6GHz with 512KBx2 cache, 3GB PC2-5300 DDR2, GeForce 6150SE nforce 430 chipset with integrated graphics sharing 256MB of memory, and a 16x DVD+/-R DL DH16A1L SATA with lightscribe (brand unknown).

I have Nero 7 installed without INCD. I also have IMGBurn installed. No other burners installed, except I think Vista comes with one built in for Vista image backups.

Shall I try and adding the VDD value as suggested by ReadMeToo? If so, which vdd key of the three?

As far as the V drive function, I just installed the DNC Pro.exe install file. No options came up to load or unload the virtual drive function. I don't think I'll need it. I used DVDXPlatinum before DNC and never needed a virtual drive. Before DVDXPlatinum I used 321's DVDXCopy. And I have used RipIt4Me extensively and never needed the virtual drive. Maybe I should just ignore the popup screen. Btw, the popup comes up right after I click on the DNC icon, then the DNC splash screen comes up and then the second pop up. After I close the pop up the second time, DNC loads and starts. Thanks for the help and patience so far.

I will have to let ReadMeToo reply back to you he is a PC expert on all the registry stuff and will be best if you wait as well on his answer. No reason to remove any of the programs installed as I have them and some.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\VirtualDeviceDrivers

do not delete it, just add VDD as instructed

this will work for Vista and Xp . the only reason I know about this , I had same error on a brand new HP9205us AMD laptop with Vista Home Prem Sp1 ,the first time I install DNC Pro on it ,this took for ever to find the fix. I bet I did 5 clean HD wipes reinstalled from scratch everything then put DNC Pro back on and this error would keep popping up .

I will say you forced me to fix this with your post and finally do something about it. So just before my post on this I did what was instructed on my system , and the 2 pop ups are gone.

So thank you for making me get off my lazy and fix it!!!!! Chuckle!!!

Just follow the above instructions and the error will disappear

This has nothing to do with DNC or Add on's this is just one of those MS screw ups Cleaning the registry will only do just that , it will not fix thisit is a VDD fix

You get a DOS Virtual Device Driver failure after you install a program which generates one of the following error messages. If you ignore the message, the program may or may not run. The problem is caused by the program corrupting the VDD value.

16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
drive:\program path
XXXX. An installable Virtual Device Driver failed DLL initialization. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

-or-

16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
drive:\program path
SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDriv ers. VDD. Virtual Device Driver format in the registry is invalid. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
You can resolve the problem by deleting the value, followed by readding the value.

Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key: SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDriv ers
Name: VDD
Type: REG_MULTI_SZ

Delete the value. When you re-add VDD, when the multi-string editor appears with a blank entry. Leave the entry blank and click OK This should resolve the problem. The problem shows up on Windows 2000 and Windows XP systems. It can occur in Windows NT if someone (or some program) deletes the VDD value.

Popup window problem resolved. :speak_cool:

Thanks Tony, Charlie, ReadMeToo and HemiDog. After adding the VDD value (didn't need to delete as it was never there) in the VirtualDeviceDrivers key, all is well, before and after reboot.

However, all the talk about V drive got my curiosity up. I read the v drive stickies on this forum today. I originally ordered DNCPro on 1/6/08, with Box_CD to be shipped. When I first ordered, I don't recall anything about v drive but I see from the DNC website today it is supposed to be part of the package. Well I don't see anything related to v drive anywhere on my PC, nor a way to download it from the DNC web site. Did I miss something, or should I wait for the to be shipped CD? (No need to answer, I already know from experience that the proper course is to start a new thread, which will help others).

Cleanup/debriefing notes for future (VistaHomePrem) reference:

My PC is an HP-OEM system, so I have no physical Vista Disk. Asking folks in my situation to insert said disk may be confusing at best. Of course, I have an Acronis True Image backup on a secondary hard drive from my first successful boot after initial Vista setup, which I can mount as a virtual drive and copy from, but many average users may not have that ability.

I note that my DNC icon is labeled "DVDneXtCOPY2 Pro". The 2 is interesting. Also, I note that the \Program Files\DVDneXtCopy2\log folder still has log files dated 01/07/08, probably related to the first original install, not the reinstalls from 01/09/08. And, my \Programs Files\DVDneXtCopy2 folder has an uninstall.exe file. Perhaps using windows to uninstall and running AWCP and CCleaner did not work as fully expected.

Evidently, I downloaded (and used in this thread) both AWCP and CCleaner, at one time or another. Not sure which or when. Clearly, I shouldn't try resolving issues late on a school night, but both programs are great jewels! My only disappointment is that I paid for upgraded versions of RegistryFirstAid and Registry Booster (my old favs) just a day or two before! Guess I could have saved a buck or two if I had your tips earlier.

And finally, if anyone knows a quick Vista fix to get rid of the dreaded Windows Security Shield from only some of my icons, I'd appreciate the assist.

I hope my debrief notes repay some of the favor I have received. Again, thanks for the help. After using DNC a while, perhaps I can come back and provide a true contribution to this great forum. D.L.

Duh! I was referencing my wall calendar still set for December 2007 and not paying close attention. I feel stupid and need to get with the New Year!

I saw the free gift link at the last DNC program startup. I'll follow that trail now. Thanks. D.L.
