One of the cool new (and little known) features in Vista is the ability to control the sound levels independently for different applications. You can even mute one program without muting them all. Here's how:

1.Click the volume icon in the system tray (notification area). It looks like a speaker horn with sound waves coming out of it.
2.Click the Mixer button at the bottom
3.Scroll through and you'll see the different applications that are running, that can use sound (for example, Outlook Inbox, Media Center, Windows Media Player).
4.Adjust the slider controls for each application individually, or click the Mute button at the bottom of the application you want to mute without affecting the others.
Note that there is a master volume control labeled Device at the front of the line of applications. You can't raise the volume of an application beyond that of the Device level without also raising the Device level. And when you raise the Device level, this effectively raises the volume on all applications.
