View Full Version : Forum vBulletin upgrade complete

Well vBulletin® will be released next week, I am going to assume Monday. This will be a major upgrade and I have no time line when this will be live on my site as I have to get with my Ultimate Administrator KT. To get a glimpse at what will be added I posted a few of the many pics that will be included on this version and hope that our users decide to use it to its fullest. I'll try to keep you informed when I know something. If I don't know anything yet I just won't post on this. Anyways feel free to talk about this here if you wish. I work very hard to create a community that wants or will interact. This is a support forum but I want it to be more than that.
Inline Spam Management and Prevention Tools
Forum spam is an increasing problem for many boards. Unfortunately, due to the visible-source nature of vBulletin and most other forum systems, most preventative measures we might add to the system can simply be reverse-engineered and worked around by persistent spammers.
Therefore, 3.7 contains a new set of tools to help clean up spam and deal with spammers.
Threads and posts can be selected in the usual inline moderation fashion, and then the new 'Delete Threads/Posts as Spam' command can be selected, which will load the spam management interface, which contains options on a single page for removing the spam posts and threads, banning the spammers and finding other spam they may have posted.
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/684/spammanagementks5.png
Thread Tagging
A new way to facilitate searching and grouping of threads, it is now possible for users to add tags to threads they post or read.
http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/476/threadtagsnewthreadgs3.png
Tags can be added when creating a new thread, or to an existing thread by any user (with appropriate permissions).
I love this as it will help the search engines to identify certain threads as key words on our site.
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/2955/threadtagsshowthreadkn0.png
Post Edit History
For boards where the history of posts is important, it is now possible to log all edits to posts and then review the changes at a later date.
http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/9717/postedithistoryil4.png
Inline Moderation Enhanced Authentication
When performing inline moderation actions, board staff will now be required to re-authenticate themselves if they have not done so in their browsing session.
This prevents the possibility of unauthorized parties acting as a moderator on a public computer where a board staff member has accidentally ticked the 'remember me' box.
http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/8317/inlinemodreauthwu5.png
New Human Verification Systems
In addition to the image verification system available in previous versions of vBulletin, 3.7 introduces the means for the administrator to choose the verification system employed on their board.
They may choose to use the popular RECAPTCHA™ system, or to define a set of questions and answers for their visitors to deal with.
Seems very nice to have to fight spammers.
Social Bookmarking of Threads
Administrators can now define a list of their favorite social bookmarking sites and have them available for use on the showthread page for bookmarking threads.
http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/8919/socialbookmarkingod5.png
I really like this one. :) As you can see there will be some digg this as well as google etc.....
New Member Profile Page
In order to accomodate all the new features in vBulletin 3.7, the member profile page has been completely redesigned from the ground up.
The new page presents information in a far cleaner and more logical manner, while dividing up information into manageable chunks using a tabbed interface.
Individual profile field categories can be displayed alone in blocks in the right column, in addition to appearing by default in the 'About Me' tab.

Gold was released today. I have no ETA on when we will go live as I'll be testing this with our Ultimate Admin KT over the weekend but it will take about a week I would presume to see if there is any errors after adding mods etc....
Charlie

We are currently running a test forum to get all the kinks out right now. Are plan is to have this all completed by tomorrow night or Saturday then go live here with this new version. When we do there will be a small amount of downtime as I need to rest all the permissions and ensure they are all indeed set correctly. I'll try to get some screen shots today as it will show our style with the new features.

Cool can't wait to see it.
Charlie
04-30-2008, 10:42 AM
It is overwhelming just by a bit but allot of nice features but I'll get with the admins on the questionable features later today as I need to update the mods needed for the new version. Some stuff we'll be missing that we have now till I get with the mod authors and ask then yo update it or them.
Charlie
04-30-2008, 12:50 PM
Here is a few new screenshots of our style and the new stuff added. There is allot so I won't show them all now as if all goes well you'll see all the new features.
This is similar to private messages but anyone can leave a message however guests will not be able to use this only those registered as I want to reduce spam. If I was to enable guest to post this I can and would have to put it in moderation to be reviewed before it is seen by the masses.

This is social bookmarking I am unfamiliar with it right now but it will help on getting the word out on a thread or the forum. Click on the image to see it in full view.
http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/5664/socialbookmarkingszn0.png
This is tags the use for this is similar to help the search engines specifically to certain threads of interest that are googled or searched. Simply to get us on search engines. Click on the image to see it in full view.

Charlie

It is taking a bit of getting used to that's for sure.
Charlie
04-30-2008, 02:14 PM
For the social bookmarking you will need to create an account for digg this and the others. On google social bookmark you'll need a valid gmail account. Thought I would let you all know this in advance so you are ready. Using this will help ring more attention to the forum which = more users which = more activity here.

Charlie

Also take note there is allot of new security features and to post when the new version of vBulletin® 3.7.0 it will e required to go into the user control panel and select the following fields. This will also assist us as the staff an easier approach to helping users out and getting the forum into a more K.I.S.S. method. There will be a few more tweaks set as well but that is more on a forum layout.
The security features will be required to set before a user posts, creates a new thread. This will be very simple things as well as being informative. They are :
What OS you use. The choices start at Window 2000 or 2000 Pro to Vista Ultimate 64 bit.
What version of DNC you use, choices are Standard, Pro, Xpress.
What Decrypter you use, choices are DVD43, AnyDVD or AnyDVD HD, Machinist.
PC Brand choices being HP, Dell, Emachines, Gateway, Acer, Custom Build, Other.
PC Type choices Laptop or Desktop.
I feel that his will help and ensure us to assisting others and making it easier on us to help as we will have the key viable info.
I really made it using the K.I.S.S. method too so a 12 year old could answer the questions. I have a few more tweaks to do with the profile as well but those will be optional like the RAM use, CPU type, DVD Drive(s) that will allow users to add if they wish.
Doing this will allow me to use the K.I.S.S. method and redo the forums whole layout as well. We were going to go live this weekend but I think that has been postponed to an unknown time as I have to get with my other Admin first. There is allot of new rich features and I want to take advantage of what we can and still be a support forum and still have fun.
I hope you all understand and enjoy this when it goes live. Below is what is set now and is mandatory except location.
Here is a pic of mine for now.
